2026 BLS Research Conference — March 30 to April 1
Bacterial leaf streak (BLS) is an increasingly important disease of cereals caused by the bacterial pathogen Xanthomonas translucens. The disease is characterized by an initial water-soaked streaks that turn to chlorotic/necrotic lesions reducing photosynthetic capacity and potentially impacting yield and grain quality.
BLS is difficult to manage due to limited sources of resistance in cultivated barley, variation among pathogen populations, and strong environmental influences on disease development. Addressing these challenges requires a deeper understanding of both the pathogen and the barley host across diverse growing conditions.
The BLS Research Initiative is a collaborative effort focused on advancing research on bacterial leaf streak of cereals. The initiative brings together researchers from multiple disciplines to study pathogen diversity, host resistance, and the biological and environmental factors that influence disease outcomes.
By fostering collaboration, sharing resources, and coordinating research efforts, the initiative aims to accelerate discovery and support the development of effective and sustainable strategies for managing BLS in cereal production systems.
The 2026 Bacterial Leaf Streak Research Conference will be held at South Dakota State University in Brookings, SD from March 30 to April 1, 2026.
Registration is open to researchers, students, industry professionals, and stakeholders.
We invite researchers to submit abstracts showcasing their work on bacterial leaf streak in small grains.
